Easter piglets. 💕 We brought home two pregnant sows last week and they were SKINNY. The kind of thing where Pete looks at me and goes “you know we shouldn’t buy them,” and I’m like “yeah but they need food and love and I’m going to make them healthy again, so….”

Well, we were told they would farrow in 4 weeks, so plan was to setup a nice pen and shelter for them to have their babies in and in the meantime focus on getting some weight on them.

Surprise surprise a few days later 14 PIGLETS. 🐷💕

They had their babies in the chute we use to deliver hay at the north end of the pasture…so the farthest possible place from the house, but easy to trap everyone and keep them safe. We quickly wrapped hog panels around them in the chute and then added chicken wire for extra guarantee that little ones won’t get out.

I must now make multiple trips up there every day to deliver water but I don’t care, I am spoiling these mamas! They’re getting organic grains, lots of leftover vegetable scraps, and all the excess milk I can spare from the cow. They are THE BEST pig mamas I’ve ever seen and haven’t lost a single piglet (typically very common for moms to roll onto babies in the first few days).

Grateful for good weather this week. Hopefully we will have their new house built in the pen by the South Gate this weekend and we can relocate them to where it’s easier to check on them and get water to them.

When we moved to Maryland and we were working to re-establish our farm, I knew I needed to find a source for pasture-raised meat and raw milk that would meet the same standards that we hold ourselves to. Before we even left NC, I found Karl & Nicole’s farm website. They were practicing all the same regenerative practices that we were trying to learn about and implement on our farm, they had the same passion for nutrient dense food and animal welfare.

They offer pasture-raised chicken and eggs, grain-free pastured pork, grassfed beef, collagen peptides, raw milk, honey, kombucha, and baked goods - all for delivery!

Our first Tunis lamb has arrived! 🐑💕

We wanted to raise Tunis sheep for years and finally put our flock together last spring after traveling to both Blacksburg, VA and Rochester, NY to collect them. This is an ancient breed that originated from North Africa, which was further developed in the United States in the late 18th century and raised by both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. They are one of the oldest heritage sheep breeds in the country and were almost completely wiped out during the civil war. They are dual purpose - prized for both their meat quality and wool, and are also known for being hardy, calm, friendly, and having exceptional mothering skills.

We’re expecting many more sweet little lambs in the next few days!!
