German Bratwurst Method

The traditional method of preparing bratwurst is to simmer them in butter, onion, and ale and then finish them on the grill.


  • 4 bratwurst links

  • 1 onion

  • 1 bottle german ale

  • A hunk of butter

  • A pinch of salt


  1. Melt butter in a cast iron skillet

  2. Add onions and cook 5-10 minutes until they start to soften and turn translucent

  3. Season onions with a pinch of salt

  4. Add brats and ale and simmer gently for 30 minutes

  5. Remove brats to a preheated grill for 2-4 minutes per side

  6. Serve on a bun or a bed of potatoes with the cooked onions, sauerkraut, and some stone-ground mustard
